The work and persona of German lifestyle and music photographer and writer Bob Sala is fuelled by 1960s counter-culture and historic pop references. He studied American and English literature and Cultural Studies and has been working for newspapers and magazines for over 20 years now. For the past decade his focus shifted almost completely to photography, earning him a worldwide following on social media, an ambassador position at Fujifilm and requests from all over the world. His work took him from Sri Lanka to Brazil, from Australia to Hawaii. It has been published in newspapers and magazines online and print and has been part of several exhibitions. He still follows his love for the written word by publishing poetry and ficiton and hosting a literary podcast titled „Im Radio das Meer“.
In his photographs he tries to merge classic fashion and portrait styles with fictional documentary elements. Themed with music, literature, and a nostalgic sense of past times, his work merges old-school vibes with a modern twist and combines analog warmth with a deep sense of the portrayed characters. In an artist portrait of the Spanish newspaper „El Pais“ the editor once described him as „a photographer with the soul of a barman“. Making a connection with his collaborators is his his first priority on set. He is at home in natural and challenging lighting situations which create an immense authenticity that can be felt throughout his portfolio.
